HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 14
Highlight – Matthew 14 New Living Translation
Jesus Walks on Water
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning[b] Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here![c]” 28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” 29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong[d]wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
Explain – Jesus sent the disciples off in a boat to cross the other side of the lake while he went up into the hills to pray. The disciples were battling strong waves when they saw Jesus walking on the water toward them. He spoke to them to not be afraid. Peter called to Jesus asking if he could come to Him walking on the water. Peter got out of the boat and did walk on water until he took his eyes from Jesus and focused on the wind and waves. When he began to sink, he called out to Jesus who reached out and grabbed him. The wind stopped when they climbed back into the boat. The disciples worshiped Him.
Apply - We too can follow the Lord into some unfamiliar and challenging circumstances. We will find that we are fine as long as our eyes are on Jesus, but should we get distracted and focus on the situation we could be in trouble. Not to fear, we should immediately call out to Jesus as Peter did for His timely rescue.
Philippians 4:6-7 ESV Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
1 Peter 5:7 ESV
James 1:2-4 ESV
Psalm 9:9-10 ESV
Respond – Lord, thank You for my salvation. Thank You Holy Spirit for residing in me and revealing Your Truth to me. I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, following You faithfully and obediently. Help me Lord to call on You in time of trouble. I pray for those that have not yet accepted You as Savior that they will seek You, find You, and abide with You through eternity. Amen.
