HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 16

Highlight Matthew 16:24-26 New Living Translation

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?[l] Is anything worth more than your soul?

Explain - Jesus explained that to be His follower a person must give up their own way, take up their own cross, and follow Him.  You benefit nothing if you lose your own soul.

Apply – Many false teachers would tell you that Jesus will accept you just as you are and you do not have to change anything in your life.  That is so contrary to the bible.  Jesus says that once we are born again, we become a new creation in Him, the old is passed away behold all things are new.  So many times Jesus told people to, “go and sin no more”.  Why would He say that if He could accept our sin.  He forgives our sin and in making us a new creation we no longer seek to sin, but seek to please Him.  Once we give up our will to His will our life becomes so much better, His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our life.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.[b]The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

James 1:12-15 ESV 12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

John 8:34 ESV Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.

1 John 3:4 ESV Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

James 4:17 ESV So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Hebrews 10:26-27 ESV For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.

Revelation 2:5 ESV Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

Acts 2:38 ESV

Respond - Lord, thank You for Your Truth, and thank You, Holy Spirit, for leading me unto all Truth.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently. Help me discern false doctrine, help me to repeat only Your Truth for Your purpose, in Jesus Name.  I pray for those that do not know You, Lord, may they be delivered from lies and be born again in You.  Amen.
