Highlight – Matthew 22 New Living Translation
The Most Important Commandment
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. 35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”
37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[e] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[f] 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
Explain – Matthew Chapter twenty-two has Jesus explaining to the Pharisees about the most important commandment.
Apply – Jesus said the most important commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[e] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ We must believe and worship God in spirit and truth. We cannot hope to fool God as He knows what we think, say, and do. The indwelling Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth and a fulfilled life.
Mark 12:30 ESV And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
Romans 12:2 ESV Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
2 Timothy 2:15 ESV Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
John 13:34 ESV A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
John 14:21 ESV Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation, for this awesome relationship that I share with You. Help me Lord to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind and others as myself. I strive to follow You obediently and faithfully. I pray for those that do not know You as their savior will accept You and follow You through eternity. Amen.
