HEAR Journaling -  Matthew Chapter 23

Highlight – Matthew 23:27-28 New Living Translation

Jesus Criticizes the Religious Leaders

27 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.28 Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Explain – Jesus criticized the religious leaders of the day, the Pharisees, He called them hypocrites, because they portrayed themselves to be righteous and honest, but inside Jesus said, they were like dead men’s bones.

Apply – There is no fooling Jesus.  He knows our very thoughts, words, and actions every moment of our lives.  We must ensure that we are being honest with God ourselves and we must also ensure that those people that we associate with and leaders that we follow are not wolves in sheep’s clothing.

1 John 4:20 ESV If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

Matthew 7:5 ESV You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Matthew 6:1 ESV “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

James 1:26 ESV If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.

Romans 2:3 ESV Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?

1 John 2:9 ESV Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.

Luke 12:2 ESV Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.

Matthew 7:15 ESV “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

Respond- Lord, thank You for Your Truth.  Help me Lord to be all that I can be in You.  Help me discern any unclean spirits and unrighteous leaders and deal with them in accordance with Your will and instruction.  I pray for those that do not know You as their savior will accept You and follow You through eternity.  Amen.
