HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 25
Highlight – Matthew 25:1-13 New Living Translation
Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids
1“Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids[a] who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps, 4 but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil. 5 When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’ 7 “All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps. 8 Then the five foolish ones asked the others, ‘Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’ 9 “But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked. 11 Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’
12 “But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’ 13 “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.
Explain – This parable of the Ten Bridesmaids tells of 5 wise bridesmaids and 5 foolish ones. The foolish ones did not prepare for the groom’s coming so they were left out of the marriage feast. The message is clear, do not be caught unprepared when Jesus returns.
Apply – We can apply this truth to our lives. The lamp oil represents our relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. We must strive to seek Him, abide in Him and with Him consistently and continuously. We must guard from any temptation or distraction that will draw our attention away from the Lord. We will not only be ready for His coming, but we will be living our best possible life, a life a love, joy and peace only available through a relationship with Him.
1 John 2:24-25 ESV Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
Hebrews 5:14 ESV But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
2 Timothy 4:7 ESV I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2 Peter 1:10 ESV Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
Matthew 28:20 ESV Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
James 5:16 ESV
Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation. Help me Lord to remain steadfast in our relationship, to be an effective servant for You ever ready for anything You may have for me. I pray for those that are not ready to meet You Lord, my they seek and find You as Lord and savior. Amen.
