Highlight – Matthew 26: New Living Translation

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,

‘God will strike[e] the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.” 33 Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.” 34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” 35 “No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same.

Explain – Peter was adamant that he would faithfully follow Jesus never deserting Him.  Jesus explained to Peter that although his intentions were good, he would none-the-less deny that he even knew Jesus three times that very day.  Peter refused to believe what Jesus was saying to him.  We know that Peter did indeed deny that he even knew Jesus three times that day, before the cock crowed.

Apply –We must be wary of what we say, not making vows that we may not be able to keep.  We would be better served to live under the control of the Holy Spirit who will lead us unto all Truth and not into any sin to include idle speech.

James 5:12 ESV But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

Matthew 5:33-37 ESV “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 ESV “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it, for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty of sin. You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth.

Ecclesiastes 5:5 ESV It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

Numbers 30:2 ESV If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation, for this awesome relationship that I share with You.  I strive to follow You obediently and faithfully.  I pray for those that do not know You as their savior will accept You and follow You through eternity.  Amen.
