HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 27

Highlight – Matthew 27:45-52 New Living Translation

The Death of Jesus

45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[j] lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”[k]  47 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. 48 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. 49 But the rest said, “Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”[l50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, 52 and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead.

Explain – Matthew chapter 27 records Jesus’ death on the cross.  Notice that when he had taken on all the sin of the world He cried out “lema sabachthani” because He was separated from the Father due to the sin, just as we are separated because of our sin.  Notice that the “curtain” or the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom.  The veil in the temple separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple.  Only the designated priest could enter the Holy of Holies.  Jewish tradition says that the temple veil was the thickness of a man’s hand which would not be torn top to bottom by any natural forces.

Apply – The tearing of the veil meant that through Jesus’ death everyone can come to Jesus on their own, the separation was removed at His death because He paid the price of sin for all mankind.

Exodus 26:33 ESV And you shall hang the veil from the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil. And the veil shall separate for you the Holy Place from the Most Holy.

Hebrews 10:19-20 ESV Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,

2 Corinthians 3:16-18 ESV But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

John 1:14 ESV And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 3:18 ESV

Respond- Lord, thank You for Your sacrifice for me, Your mercy and grace are precious in spite of my sinful ways.  Thank You for this awesome relationship that I share with You.  I strive to follow You obediently and faithfully.  I pray for those that do not know You as their savior.  Amen.
