Highlight – Matthew 6:19-24 New Living Translation

Teaching about Money and Possessions

19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is! 24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

Explain – Jesus explained that people must store their treasures in heaven.  He said that where people store up treasure reflects the desires of their hearts.  No one can serve two masters.  Believers must serve Him fully and completely in all their ways.

Apply – We need to confirm that the Lord is indeed our master, that our desire is to serve Him completely and fully in all our ways and not rely on worldly treasure.  We must remove anything in our lives that will hinder our relationship with the Lord, any idol, be it money, power, fame, prestige, etc.

Matthew 13:44 ESV “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Luke 6:38 ESV Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

1 Timothy 6:10 ESV For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Malachi 3:10 ESV Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

Respond- Lord, thank You for the wonderful life that I have in You.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently in all things including giving as You direct.  I take joy in sharing as a faithful servant, Lord.  You are my Lord, if there is anything between You and me, Lord, show me what I must do to make my life fully and completely right with You.  I pray for others that may have misplaced priorities, help them Lord to see Your Truth and follow You completely and obediently.  Amen.
