Highlight – Matthew 9:1-8 New Living Translation

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

1 Jesus climbed into a boat and went back across the lake to his own town. Some people brought to him a paralyzed man on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Be encouraged, my child! Your sins are forgiven.” But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, “That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?” Jesus knew[a] what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man[b]has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up and went home! Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority.

Explain – When Jesus spoke saying the paralyzed man’s sins had been forgiven, some teachers of religious law said to themselves that Jesus was speaking blasphemy, thinking that Jesus was posing as God.  Jesus knew their thoughts and challenged th em about the evil thoughts in their hearts.  Jesus proved His power by healing the paralyzed man.

The NLT says that “Fear” swept through the crowd as they say that happen.  The KJV says it more clearly:

Matthew 9:8 KJV But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God,

which had given such power unto men.

The crowd marveled at the healing.  at Jesus demonstrated the Truth to the entire crowd including the mocking religious skeptics.

Apply - We have skeptics today as well.  Self-proclaimed religious leaders that deny the power of God, the three in One.  Jesus sees their hearts as well and will deal with them in His own time.  We must be alert and strictly follow the Holy Spirit who gives discernment so that we are not drawn away by the deception of false doctrines.

Matthew 7:21-23 ESV

Titus 1:16 ESV

Jude 1:17-19 ESV
Romans 16:17-18
ESV I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

1 John 4:1 ESV Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Respond – Lord, I rededicate my life to You.  I strive to follow You, Holy Spirit, faithfully and obediently.  Please provide discernment to recognize false information and ungodly sources.  I pray for those that do not know You, Lord, that they will seek and find You today.  Amen.
