HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 3
Highlight – Matthew 3:13-17 New Living Translation
The Baptism of Jesus
13 Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.
14 But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?”
15 But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.[f]” So John agreed to baptize him.
16 After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened[g] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.
17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
Explain – We can see the Godhead in Matthew Chapter 3, where Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist. Jesus comes out of the water and the Holy Spirit descends on Him, the God the Father speaks from heaven saying “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
Apply – It is a difficult concept, one God consisting of three different persons. Some things are far beyond our understanding, so we must believe them by faith because God has told us.
Some people think they must fully understand God before than can accept Him. The same people will use a microwave oven, trusting it will deliver some fresh popped popcorn, but do not fully understand how it works.
The same people will listen to a surgeon explain the procedure that they are about to undergo, and will submit to the surgery without fully comprehending just what is being done.
We trust airplane pilots, news reporters, teachers, etc… so why do some refuse to trust the one and only true God that created it all?
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
Psalm 20:7 ESV Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
James 1:6 ESV But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation. I trust You Lord, I strive to seek You daily, to follow You obediently and faithfully. I pray for those that do not know You as their savior will seek and find You, and follow You through eternity. Amen.
