Highlight – Matthew 4:1-11 New Living Translation

The Temptation of Jesus

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil.

2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.

3 During that time the devil[a] came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple,

6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’[c]”

7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’[d]”

8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”

10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’[e]”

11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

Explain – Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to the wilderness for forty days and nights fasting.  After the forty days of fasting He was tempted by Satan three times where Jesus countered the temptation with scripture.  Afterward the devil, Satan, went away and some angels came and took care of Jesus.

Apply – We can learn from this; we must follow the Holy Spirit wherever He leads us.  Should we ever be confronted with temptation we know we can counter that temptation with scripture, the Word of God.  Satan wants to stop us any way he can, but if we trust the Lord with all our hears, submit fully to the Lord, the devil will flee and the Holy Spirit will always show us a way of escape.

James 4:7 ESV Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Peter 5:8-9 ESV Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

James 1:2-4 ESV Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation and Your Truth.  Help me Lord to effectively apply Your Holy Word, the sword of the Spirit, to fend off all spiritual adversaries.  I trust You Lord, I strive to seek You daily, to follow You obediently and faithfully.  I pray for those that do not know You as their savior will seek and find You, and follow You through eternity.  Amen.
