Highlight – Matthew 8:23-27 New Living Translation
Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. 27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”
Explain – This account in Matthew Chapter eight tells of Jesus and the disciples crossing the lake and a storm came up scaring the disciples, noting that Jesus was asleep. Many of the disciples were fishermen, men that would be accustomed to a boat in bad weather, but these hardy men were afraid for their lives. The disciples went to Jesus in their despair, and Jesus calmed the wind and waves. They were amazed that He was able to command the wind and waves. So why did they wake Jesus?
Apply – We can learn from this that no matter what life brings us, no matter what our circumstances, we should turn to Jesus. Jesus will know just what to do, He can tell us what we need to do. Above all, we need not be afraid in any circumstance.
Isaiah 41:10 ESV Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
1 John 4:18 ESV There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
Psalm 23:4 ESV Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Philippians 4:6-7 ESV Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Respond- Lord, thank You for my salvation, for Your perpetual care for me in all situations. Help me Lord to rely on You, to never fear, but to abide in You as You abide in me forever. I pray for those that are in anxious fear, may they find refuge in You today. Amen.
