The waters are muddy - so let's dive in and help clear them up!!
In this episode, we investigate the difference between having a
certificate in a course and a certification in a specific discipline, this is
laid out by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at University of Virginia. While this isn’t specific to the world of dog training, it does help identify some basic differences between obtaining a certificate and earning a certification.
We also talk about investigating organizational position statements and COE (code of ethics) for professionals that claim or advertise their memberships or affiliations. Here are some examples of industry Position Statements & COE:
Professional Association of Canine Trainers: Ethical Dog Training and Code of Conduct
Animal Behavior & Training Council: Code of Professional Conduct
American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior: Position
Statement on Humane Dog Training
Pet Professional Guild: Position Statements and Guiding Principles
Association of Professional Dog Trainers: LIMA – Effective Behavior Intervention Policy and Code of Professional Ethics
