November 27th, 2022 Sermon at King's Chapel Fl from Pastor Jeff Jakes

Scripture:

The Christmas season is a season of wonder! The greatest of all wonders is that God would become a man and step into time and enter into the darkness and brokenness of our world to rescue lost sinners like us. Wonder of wonders! But the entire advent season is filled with wonder. The wonder of a virgin being pregnant with God’s promised Messiah. The wonder of a King being born in a manger. The wonder of a star leading wise men to worship Jesus, the new born King. The wonder of a choir of angels filling the sky to sing of God’s glory when God’s Son is born. The wonder of shepherds out in a field watching their flock one night to be the ones that heavenly messengers tell the Good News that produce Great Joy, that in the town of David, Christ the Messiah is born! Christmas is truly the season of wonder!

Even the genealogy of Jesus Christ given at the very beginning of the Gospel of Matthew produces great wonder! The wonder is not found in Jesus being the son of David and the son of Abraham. Scripture foretold that the Messiah would come through those Old Testament pillars. The wonder of wonders found in Matthew’s listing of Jesus’ genealogy are the five women listed in Jesus lineage!

First of all, it is a wonder that any women would be listed in Jesus’ genealogy! In those days, women were not typically listed in one’s genealogy! Secondly, it is scandalously wondrous that these women are listed in God’s Word as a part of Jesus’ lineage! These women are a group of hated outsiders, a group of world-class sinners, a group of common “plain-Janes” who have found their way into God’s Holy Word and Jesus’ Family Tree! Wonder of wonders!

This advent season, we will be discovering the wonder of who these women are and how their stories wondrously fit into God’s Story of Redemption! As we get to know the wonder of these women listed in Jesus’ genealogy, we will experience the wonder of wonders that our names can become a part of Jesus’ family tree too! Wonder of Wonders!
