When we transitioned from college to our full-time jobs, we experienced lots of friction with our managers and teammates. At first, we second-guessed ourselves and wondered if the issue was ourselves or our environment. After a few months, we realized that so many other early-in-career folks experienced the same frustrations, but didn't talk about them for a variety of reasons, including (1) not knowing who to trust, (2) fearing retaliation from authority figures, and (3) team members gaslighting us. When we finally realized we were not alone and entirely at fault, we each bravely moved to new teams. Red flags may not be obvious at first, and we hope listeners can recognize red flags in their workplace and feel empowered to change teams or ask others to do better.
