Description

If every classroom can instill their students with a sense of "you're beautiful, you're worthwhile, you're lovable, and that's WHY x, y, and z is what you're capable of and what I'm going to hold you to"... I think that would be the epitome of education.

What are your memories of the classroom? Do you remember the nostalgic moments if you're a 2000s kid, wheeling in a projector with transparencies to do worksheets as a class, or finding gum on the bottom of the chair? Maybe you remember moments when you felt unseen and lost motivation due to a negative interaction with a teacher. And maybe you've wondered how education has evolved since we've left school.

Irene's been a guest on our show before, and she's back to reflect on her time as a middle school teacher for the last few years. She shares how some of those practices and philosophies have evolved since we’ve been in the classroom, as we collectively reflect on the impact of the classroom!

We also discuss Code Switch's series on Ron Brown High School, a radical public high school for boys of color that opened in 2016. What would classrooms look like with restorative justice as a leading principle?
