Gun control advocates often site Australia's gun "ban" (which wasn't a ban - they didn't get rid of all guns, contrary to popular belief on the Left) as a model for the US to adopt to solve gun violence. But how effective has it been in Australia? And is the policy replicable in the US? My friend Derek and I discuss.
A few numbers for you:
- The Australian government bought back 600,000 guns, which at the time was approximately 20-33% of the firearms in the country
- If the US had the same success rate, with the approximate 350,000,000 guns owned by citizens, there would still be more than 200,000,000 guns in the US.
- It's worth asking who from the government is going to have the resources to round up tens or hundreds of millions of guns
