We often hear the phrase, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." It's a concept that resonates with many of us in recovery, especially when we reflect on what we did when we were actively drinking. In my stroke recovery, I've encountered a different form of insanity. I know what hurts my head and yet I do it anyway.
In both drinking and post-stroke recovery, I've sacrificed my future self for instant gratification. When we fully believed we will have a greater reward in the future, we're willing to defer gratification. In my journey, it's become clear that I don't fully believe that I'll get better in the future if I delay gratification now. This is parallel to how I felt as an alcoholic.
Listen to this episode to learn more about how I explore the idea of visualizing your future self to help defer instant gratification.
