Habits are built in the same way that neuroplasticity enables stroke survivors to relearn. Rachel shares about the first years of sobriety as she practiced picking up the phone, going to meetings, working the steps, and praying when life was good. She says it helped her to create that muscle memory so that she knew exactly what to do when life was hard.
