I took a day off from my self-imposed, made-up podcast job yesterday. My family visited, and my husband, ever the overachiever, made sure we were well-fed. It was a great time, but with my vestibular disorder, even good days can leave me wrecked. So, I took a break as a podcaster yesterday to reset. Balance is priority for me (pardon the pun, vesties), learning when to push and when to rest. Whether it’s sobriety, stroke and vestibular recovery, or dealing with chronic pain, my recovery program is a place to retreat. I’m always chasing emotional balance, that home inside myself where I can find calm, even when everything feels overwhelming.
Emotional balance is navigating the hard days, believing that everything is ok even when I don’t feel good. Early in sobriety, I thought handling things meant taking control, fixing problems, and when things were hard I wasn’t ok. Now, I understand that handling things can just be stepping back, listening more, and letting go of what I can’t control. That shift has been huge for me in how I move through life. Instead of white-knuckling my way through chronic pain, I lean in to community and family. And as a result, everything is okay, even when it gets hard. That’s what emotional balance looks like for me today.
