What is a boomerang phrase, Rachel?

Well, I'm glad you asked, listener! No matter where my mind has shot off to, a phrase like “first things first” reminds me of my priorities. Boomerang phrases I've learned in my sobriety program help me navigate the daily choices I face when living in full-time recovery as a stroke survivor with vestibular migraines and vision challenges as a result of a vestibular disorder.

For a recovering alcoholic, "first things first" means abstaining from alcohol is non-negotiable. Survival is recognizing alcoholism as the life-threatening disease it is, and understanding that treatment means not taking a drink. It comes first in my life.

In the context of stroke and vestibular recovery, this mantra underscores the importance of prioritizing our health and therapeutic activities above all else—because without it, every other aspect of our lives will depend on it. This could mean adhering to rehabilitation exercises, attending therapy sessions, or ensuring we get adequate rest. Just like the importance of not drinking for the alcoholic, for those recovering from a stroke or dealing with vestibular issues, engaging in prescribed recovery activities is vital for improvement, longevity, and survival.
