Description

Before working through the steps of my sobriety program, my happiness was tied to unhealthy conditions. I even made my early sobriety dependent on conditions. Relationships became my source of self-approval, yet fear tainted all of them. I’ve since learned that happiness is an inside job.

Sober me, Rachel version 2.0, had to get to know myself, my likes and dislikes, and learn how to love and listen like an adult. Relationships became a challenge as I navigated this growth. My boyfriend and I were learning how to form a true partnership without realizing it at the time. This is why we’re often told not to make major life changes in the first year of sobriety.

When I stopped drinking, I thought the fun was over. I didn’t know who I was, and I doubted my boyfriend would like the new me. Spoiler alert: I was wrong. He ended up marrying me! By prioritizing my recovery, the relationship naturally followed. Over eight years later, I’ve learned that I must still put my sobriety above everything else, because without it, I have nothing.
