Today, I talk about connection in recovery, specifically the synergy of shared experiences. I had a call today that reminded me that I’m not alone, renewed my hope of improvement, and increased my confidence that I may be headed down the right diagnosis path. So, in sharing with you about my conversation today with a man we'll call Mr. Stroke Friend, I will also share the benefits of connecting with someone walking a parallel path, or someone who walked the path before you. That someone is only one call away, but you are the one that has to pick up the phone.
Today’s song is “One Call Away” by Charlie Puth.
There's an instant kinship in hearing someone articulate your pain, describing it with almost the same words. Discussing our journeys and hearing about his improvements after vestibular therapy—I'm on the cusp of starting myself—brought a bit of hope. Recovery can be very lonely, but shared challenges link us together as human beings. Knowing someone else has fought this battle before me is so incredibly reassuring.
To Mr. Stroke Friend and Your wife, Mrs. Stroke Friend, who shared your story with me, thank you! You’ve been a lighthouse during a time that has gotten very dark for me. I’m forever grateful for your time and your willingness to commit your time to helping others through Vestibular Disorder Association or VeDA.
