Today's episode is about personal transformation, specifically how patience plays a role in that transformation. I talk about how others see us, how we see ourselves, and how we see the world. Every aspect of our perception shifts throughout sobriety.
I thought that putting down the drink was simply having to live my life without the crutch that helped me face it. But as perceptions slowly changed I noticed a whole new world was opening up in front of me.
One of the most difficult times I faced while getting sober was that space between where my perception of myself had changed, but the perception others had of me was still based on years of past actions. It takes time for others to trust that this new version of ourselves is real. Today I talk about the patience that is needed to let others come to see the new us in their own time.
The longer we work the principles of our program in every aspect of our lives the clearer our new perception becomes. It takes consistency and patience. I heard somebody say this morning that we judge ourselves by our thoughts, but others judge us by our actions. And that explains the gap. In time, others see our actions, and those actions are what ultimately shift their perception.
