I’m learning to be compassionate toward myself. I spent so long punishing myself, through drinking, starving, self-criticism, and isolation, that I lacked self-kindness. Emotional sobriety is learning to sit with discomfort and know I’m ok, grow through slow and painful changes, and not expect myself to be further along than I am. Managing emotions sometimes feels like clawing out of an abyss with your fingernails. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, things do shift.
Today I remind myself that faith is holding onto hope when life bites me in the ankles. I choose to believe in the version of me I haven’t met yet. The version who will bloom through the struggles I face today is only possible through self-kindness. Resilience is having faith that a new, healthier version of me will emerge through each challenge.
