Today I was interviewed by the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA) to feature my story in the spring. I’m passionate about giving back to the communities and organizations that guided me in early stroke recovery. I was lost, struggling to do my own research online with limited vision. I found an article published by VEDA called Vision Challenges with Vestibular Disorders. This was my gateway to understanding a disability that, to this day, no doctor has been able to definitively explain since my stroke.
My mind has been a battleground for much of my life, but in recovery, I’ve learned I don’t have to keep fighting. Instead, I can accept what is or take action to change it. I couldn’t be so bold until I learned how to share with another human being the stinking thinking that plagued me. Over time, I rewired my brain to reach out instead of isolate, pause instead of reacting, shine a light in the dark instead of hiding in the shadows, and advocate when I feel alone.
I’ve been learning to tell my story without fear, recognizing self-doubt and redirecting my thoughts to helping others. I don’t have to believe everything I think. In fact, I get to choose which thoughts serve me and which to let go.
