In today's episode of the Recovery Daily Podcast, I explore a mindset shift that can greatly enhance your life: moving beyond asking “why” and instead focusing on “what” and “how.” This shift is powerful in keeping a solution-based attitude about drinking, relapsing, and mental unwellness, helping to be more proactive and empowered.
We can get caught in a loop of asking “why.” Why did this happen to me? Why do I feel this way? Why can’t I just stop drinking? While these questions are valid and sometimes necessary, they can lead to a cycle of rumination and excuses. Instead of finding solutions, we get stuck in patterns of blame and self-pity, which is especially dangerous in the context of alcoholism and mental health.
By shifting our focus from “why” to “what” and “how,” we can break free from this cycle. Instead of asking, “Why do I drink?” ask, “What am I going to do about my drinking?” Instead of asking, “Why did I relapse?” ask, “How can I overcome this relapse and get back on track?” This approach moves us from passivity to active problem-solving, helping us to look forward instead of backward.
Today I also discuss practical steps to apply this mindset to drinking, relapsing, and mental unwellness. Starting with gratitude after a relapse and focusing on solutions can help one move forward and out of a relapse. Whether it’s seeking therapy, joining a support group, or making lifestyle changes, taking actionable steps moves us towards sobriety and mental well-being.
