In early sobriety, laughing at my humiliating past felt impossible. But with time, healing, and liberation from that version of me, humor in recovery has been a sign of growth. Laughter can be a tool in healing, although joking about my past with non-alcoholics can get awkward. Its ok to acknowledge our past with humor without glorifying it. There is a line I don’t cross, however; I never joke about needing a drink to handle life. There’s also a fragile boundary between self-deprecating humor and self-compassion with self-forgiveness.
Humor can be encouraging in the recovery community, rather than always focusing on the pain. Sharing laughter connects us in recovery. There’s even a vestibular humor chat at the VEDA conference this week. And while I’m not quite there yet, I know from my experience in sobriety that if I keep showing up for myself, practicing gratitude, willingness, and acceptance, I just might get there.
