Hierocles’ Circles of Concern
“You need to accept you are a white belt again,” reflects Rob Sarver, Lieutenant (SEAL) who completed seven active deployments during his service, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. Letting go of his black belt status in the Navy world he knew well to rediscovering himself in his civilian life afterwards, has been a hero’s journey for him. “I spent 9 years in the desert, going from job to job and not finding my place.” Eventually, just like in the military, he found his purpose in being of service to others. In the Navy, it’s mission first, then team, then teammates, then self. He is focused and fed by these so called ‘Hierocles’ Circles of Concern’ also in his civilian life now. “I learn so much from my 8-year-old son…I want to help him become the best he can be and be a role model for him.” And in the companies he leads, he focused on providing opportunities for the people he works with. When he feels off balance, he reminds himself of his SEAL teammates who made the ultimate sacrifice. “I get to live and exercise my free will. I need to put this life that I have been given to good use.”
