Inclusive Leaders Call in and Call Out
“Sometimes you need to rock the boat, to create a culture of belonging” shares Jonathan Stutz, diversity, equity and cross-cultural management consultant and author of Daily Practices of Inclusive Leaders. Everyone deserves to be seen, heard, valued and understood and this requires us to speak up in moments where we see this not happening. We have Call In and Call Out moments. Calling In involves slowing down the conversation, maybe mentioning the impact on you and asking the person to share more. Calling Out lets the other person know that this behavior is not acceptable: We don’t do this around here. “Inclusive leadership is leadership,” says Jonathan. It’s about accessing and including the talent of people who have been historically underestimated, so that the organization mirrors the customers they serve. In the end, it’s about building effective teams.
