I was reminded of the well-known Christian hymn Amazing Grace, composed by John Newton in 1779.Amazing grace! How sweet the soundThat saved a wretch like me.I once was lost, but now am found,Was blind but now I see.Newton, a slave trader, experienced a conversion to Christ during a storm off the coast of Ireland in 1748. Crying out to God for mercy, he discovered the depths of God’s love. Ultimately, he left slave trading to become an ordained Anglican minister.
