Join us in discussing this month’s book club pick How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive by Craig DiLouie.

Horror isn’t horror unless it’s real. Max feels like a fool. After attending the premier for the third installment of his horror franchise, he can’t get the audience’s laughter out of his head. It haunts him. It makes him want to quit. But the contract with his producer has him strangled to produce one more movie and the producer is itching for another installment in the franchise. After stumbling on footage of the worst day in cinematic history — when a whole movie crew is lost to a helicopter accident – Max knows what he needs to go down in history. He needs to make audiences feel the visceral fear of horror: no more campy dialogue and over-the-top special FX. He wants to make the real deal. To unless true terror. And when he stumbles upon the camera that caught that horrible accident, he learns that there is more to the story. The accident might not be an accident. There may be more power through the view finder. But will Max be able to harness it to make his name go down in history?

In this conversation, CJ and Kait discuss their thoughts on the book 'How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive' by Craig DeLuey. They talk about the 80s setting, the film industry’s portrayal, and the book’s writing style. CJ expresses her dislike for the story’s excessive telling and lack of originality, while Kait defends the book and appreciates its exploration of the film industry. They also discuss the character development, the use of similes, and the portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships in the book. They also discuss the book’s pacing and certain plot points. Despite their differences, they both appreciate the unique aspects of the story and the author's ability to create a suspenseful atmosphere.

For our next book, we’ll be hosting a two-part book club starting with What Moves the Dead and then What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher.
