For a long time we as fans assumed that red lightsabers had red crystals, thus giving them their distinctive color. A few years ago, the Darth Vader comic series revealed that a red crystal is not naturally occurring, but rather the result of a Dark Side user pouring their anger and hate into a normal crystal and "bleeding" it red.
