In September of 1978, fifteen-year-old Mary Vincent was hitchhiking from Nevada to California to stay with her grandfather amidst her parents' recent divorce. She stood among a group of fellow hitchhikers with a sigh held up for passing cars reading “Going South”. When an elderly man driving a van pulled alongside the road and offered her a ride.
