A Despised Birthright
Scripture Reference: Genesis 25:27-34
v.27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Commentary: This verse introduces us to Isaac and Rebekah’s children, Esau, and Jacob. Esau was a skillful hunter and a man of the field while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. Esau was a outdoorsman while Jacob preferred staying at home.
v.28 And Isaac loved Esau because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Commentary: This verse presents us with some unfortunate information that will play into future problems of these two brothers. Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed eating the wild game that Esau caught. But Rebekah loved Jacob because enjoyed helping around the house. This information is told to us to explain some of the stormy clouds that are brewing in this family.
