“Thus, Said the Lord, So Will I, Comfort You”
Scripture Reference: Isaiah 66:10-13 (KJV)
v.10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem and be glad about her all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:
Commentary: All God’s people are called to share in Jerusalem’s joy. The time of deliverance, victory, and vindication have come! Be glad about her, all you who love her! If God’s people will do this, it will be a blessing for them also: that you may feed and be satisfied with the consolation of her bosom.
• Rejoice – to be thankful, happy, and grateful; to feel joy or great delight
• Be glad – to remain or occupy a place of cheerfulness or pleasure
• Mourn – to feel grief or sorrow, to lament, weep, or cry
v.11 That ye may suck and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.
• Suck – to draw, taste, or feed from
• Be satisfied – to remain or occupy a place of contentment, gratification, or fulfillment
• Consolations – a state of being comforted, relieved, or ease
• Milk out – refers to being nourish and nurture
• Delight – a high degree of gratification, pleasure, or enjoyment
• Abundance – refers to plenty, or that which is sufficient, or enough
• Glory – speaks to that which is magnificent, splendor or wonderful
v.12 For thus said the Lord, behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.
Commentary: Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river: When the Messiah returns in glory and triumph, the peace of Jerusalem will be like a gentle, powerful river that is never disturbed. But not Jerusalem alone, also, the glory of the Gentiles shall be like a flowing stream.
• Extend – to stretch forth or spread out
• Peace – the state of being tranquil, quiet, calm, or secured
• River – a natural stream of water usually of a considerable amount or volume
• Gentiles – refers to all nations outside of the Jewish nation
• Borne – to transported, carried, or held
• Dandled – to be shook, shaken, or bounced up and down on one’s knee
v.13 As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
Commentary: As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. God speaks with supreme tenderness to His faithful servants. No one can comfort like a mother, and God will bring that kind of comfort to His people.
• Mother – refers to the female parent, a woman, usually the primary nurturer
• Comfort – to give strength, hope, or ease from trouble or grief; to console
