The holidays can be volatile time for many victims of abuse. Alcohol, drugs, and gambling may ignite a spark within an abusive situation. Or joblessness or financial issues can factor in. Here are a few tips to consider when planning your holiday especially if you're traveling. Given itinerary to your friends and family. Check in often if you can. Keep important numbers on your speed dial or ICE on your cell phone. Walk away if possible. Minimize your time alone with your abuser or make sure there are people surrounding you to be as witnesses if need be. If you trust your neighbors ask if they can do a wellness check on you. Teach your child emergency numbers.
Someone out there needs to know they are not alone and that they can survive. Perhaps you are a parent or friend of someone trapped in an abusive relationship and need to know how to help. My goal is to share awareness, offer empowerment, and educate others about emotional traumas and domestic abuse. Here I will share my story and also stories of courage and healing from Survivors, Coaches, to Therapists/Counselors.
