Description

Good evening, and welcome to a live edition of Municipal Affairs. I’m Christopher Brown, and tonight we’re diving into a conversation that stretches far beyond potholes, zoning bylaws, and property taxes — straight into the heart of Canada’s unity debate.

At the center of it all is the Forever Canada campaign, a movement launched by former Alberta Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk. Its goal: to rally support for keeping Alberta firmly within Confederation. And while the campaign gains momentum, it’s drawing municipal leaders into the national spotlight — leaders who usually stick closer to the ground-level concerns of their residents.

But is this the right move? As mayors and councillors take public stances on Forever Canada, are they elevating their role as democratic leaders — or risking dividing their communities? And with municipal election campaigns in full swing, does this kind of advocacy strengthen their credibility, or pull them away from the issues closest to home?

Tonight, we put those questions directly to three local leaders who’ve chosen to publicly align themselves with the campaign. Joining us are St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron, Penhold Mayor Mike Yargeau, and Canmore Councillor Wade Graham.

It’s a conversation about politics, identity, and the evolving role of municipal leadership.
