As tensions rise over a nationwide labour dispute between Canada’s two major freight railways and the unions representing their workers, rural communities across the Prairie provinces are bracing for impact.
As of Thursday, August 22nd, the two major railways companies locked out over 9,000 works causing stoppage of trains across the Country.
The stoppage raises alarms within the associations representing rural Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba municipalities. These groups, including the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), and the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM), are particularly concerned about the devastating effects the disruption will have on Prairie agricultural producers, consumers, and other industries critical to rural economies.
The Three Organizations are calling on the federal government to impose binding arbitration if an agreement cannot be reached between the railways and the union.
The three municipal groups say that the stakes are high; even a short-term work stoppage would severely impact the agriculture sector, which is already struggling with limited access to rail cars for moving harvests to market.
We chat with SARM Interim President Bill Huber about the stoppage and what it will mean for farmers, and municipalities in the Province of Saskatchewan, and across western Canada.
