Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
Last week, mayors from across Saskatchewan gathered in Regina for a very unique event: Summer School.
But this wasn’t the kind of summer school you might remember. Hosted at the University of Regina, this two-day program, exclusively for mayors, focused on the fundamentals of municipal leadership — from governance and conflict of interest to strengthening leadership skills.
It was an opportunity not just to learn from expert presenters, but also to connect with peers, share ideas, and explore the challenges and opportunities that come with leading communities across our province.
We caught up with SUMA President Randy Goulden after the event wrapped to talk about the summer school, check in with her about the conversations she had with municipal leaders, and discuss why the idea of being stronger together remains so vital for Saskatchewan municipalities.
During the first day of the event, we caught up with mayors from across Saskatchewan to hear directly from them about the importance of SUMA, and what the first 10 months have been like for them as Mayors leading a new mandate. We chat with Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers, Town of Grand Coulee Mayor Lee-Ann Ross, Town of Wawota Mayor Kevin Kay, and Town of Assiniboia Mayor Sharon Schauenberg
