In this episode of the Mental Health mixtape, Dr. Megan McElheran and Ryan Collyer chat with Steve Farina, a Fire Fighter and Mental Health Advocate working in British Columbia who works directly to promote mental health within the Fire Service. After 2 suicides in Surry, British Columbia, Farina stated that he was asked to assess the needs as to why this had happened. In Farina's own words he wanted to "bring suicide out of the shadows" by "finding out what the problem is" and "doing a deep dive" into the reason behind these tragedies.
In the conversation we explore the many aspects of how Farina chose to address the problems through education and awareness and his unwavering commitment to finding new solutions, creating conversations and showing what it is to be vulnerable.
