In the latest episode of the Heald Approach Podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Lisa Eaton, a pioneering business leader and marketing expert who shared her inspiring journey of resilience, innovation, and breaking barriers.
Our guest founded the Fabric Academy in 2021, an innovative platform revolutionising marketing education globally. Before that, she co-founded Unwritten Group and founded Salsa Juice, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit since 2002. Her accolades include being named one of the most influential women in tech and receiving multiple awards for her strategic initiatives.
Building a tech business as a non-technical founder presented significant challenges. Early on, she was advised to find a technical co-founder, ideally male, a suggestion she resisted. Instead, she leveraged her network of skilled engineers to develop the Fabric Academy's platform, proving that determination and a strong support system can overcome conventional expectations.
For the first time, she had to raise investment to scale her business. Entering a male-dominated world with minimal connections and no prior experience, she faced the daunting statistic that only 2% of VC funding goes to female-founded businesses. Nevertheless, her tenacity paid off as she successfully secured the necessary investment, highlighting the importance of resilience and a mindset geared towards overcoming obstacles.
Her story underscores the critical role of passion and purpose in entrepreneurial success. Initially driven by a love for marketing and strategy, her focus shifted as she identified a gap in the market and a new passion for bridging the education-industry divide. This transition illustrates that our professional paths can and should evolve with our personal growth and changing circumstances.
She emphasises goal setting as a vital practice for maintaining focus and driving progress. Her disciplined approach to setting and achieving both personal and professional goals has been instrumental in her success. This structured method, combined with a deep understanding of her industry, allowed her to navigate the complexities of building a new business during the pandemic.
