"Spread your map of where you’re going across that bar as I have spread my map across every cafe in the world as I travelled and you put your line on that map, a rough line in pencil, and what’ll happen is, people in the bar start talking to you ‘Oh where are you going mate?’ and you’ll say, ‘Oh I’m doing Paris to Istanbul’ for example. And they’ll turn around and say, ‘Mate you don’t want to go that way, I went to that, and this, and there’s an amazing set of caves there.’ And suddenly people put their two Ps worth in and who am I to argue? They’ve been on holiday in that area. And I’ve started to suddenly to go the routes, I was still going to end up in Istanbul but I started to go the routes those people had, and sure enough, those caves were sensational."
Episode #15 of The Hope Initiative with Mark Hepworth.
In developing this podcast, I've come to understand that I need to talk less and ask better questions.
Two questions that are answered in this interview are;
'What's the maddest thing you've ever purchased whilst drunk?'
And, 'What is the answer to life?'
Ponder on that for a moment before getting lost in the glorious voice of Mark.
Mark and I met whilst working together at Hallam Cycles back in 2015 and it's fair to say he's one of the most well travelled and remarkable humans I've met (pardon the pun).
In this interview, Mark explains his theory on having a goal of 100 things and why it's important in providing purpose to a persons life. What he has learnt from studying over 600 people closely whilst also working in sales for many decades and selling over 20,000 bikes to people of all ages. He also shares some of his top tips on travelling the world (he's been across 75 countries and counting), what to do when you're out in a new city, going with the flow, and what is arguably the maddest drunk purchase I've ever heard of; which all worked out in the end. I'll drink to that!
Please enjoy this lovely chat with the effervescent, Mark Hepworth.
