"I reckon, we all experience moments of when we have self doubt. I think it's really important to know that if you are experiencing self doubt, you're not alone. That you're normal, but there are also things that you can do but one of the best things you can do is just be true to yourself.
Not everyone's going to like you, but be true to yourself because a lot of people will and the ones that do like you, they're the ones that will bring you happiness. They're the ones that will save your ass when it needs to be saved, and they're the ones that make you a better human being... For me, thats the key.
But if you try and be someone that you're not and you hang out with a crew that don't really like you, only like you for who you're not, because you're putting that on. Then mate, you just can't keep it up mate. You just can't keep it up..."
Episode #33 of The Hope Initiative with Marty Heppell
Martin and I played together for Whitehorse United in 2008-09. Whilst I was coming through the reserves as a teenager, Martin was playing a sport he never had before aside from kick about in the school yards 20 years earlier...
But that didn't stop him leaving an indelible mark on my life and as a result, I was deadset on sharing his story from the moment I started this podcast.
This conversation does not disappoint.
From growing up in South East Asian Borneo with his family as the only white folk, to playing in the AFL for St Kilda and Melbourne, teaching students and now travelling the country communicating the importances of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.
He is an absolute firecracker of energy and I love this episode. I truly love it.
I hope you do too.
Enjoy the legendary, Martin Heppell!
Cheers,
Rien
