Description

Selim is a rapper, producer, and activist from Berlin who leads workshops for migrant kids, using rap to teach them German and introduce them to German culture. He also runs a TikTok channel where he interviews people on the streets, giving them a platform to share their experiences of living in Germany as People of Color.

In this episode, Selim opens up about his life story, describing the challenges of having his identity questioned daily, even though his mother is German and he was born in Germany. He shares how rap saved his life, transformed him into a writer, and opened the door to a new career in music.

We also discussed Germany's shifting political landscape, the rise of the far-right, and the increasing normalization of xenophobic attitudes and language toward migrants. This was an insightful and eye-opening conversation where we learned from someone who, despite being born in Germany, had a different experience growing up and how he turned that difference into his superpower.
