An EXCERPT from a live presentation by Paul J. Pettit.
The question was asked: "How do we become happy"?
The answer shared by Paul: "We become happy through the cessation of suffering. The cessation of suffering is achieved when one ceases seeking that which is not real; only then will one cease becoming"
In practical terms:
Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible; suddenly you will become aware that you are no longer doing, you are in fact being, what was once deemed impossible.
This can only be achieved through non-attachment. For it is through the action of non-attachment alone that the cessation of suffering arises. Suffering cannot exist in a realm of non-attachment, for there is nothing for it to attach to.
Practice in every moment: Allow the Self to experience an emotion, and then release the moment. In doing so we create a realm of non-attachment. This doesn’t mean we do not feel emotions, in fact the experience is the opposite. We feel all emotions, experiencing life to its fullest; remaining forever open to every ‘now’ moment - every new emotion.
