When Things Don’t Go as Planned

Hey everyone, welcome back to BodyMedicine! I’m Jacqueline Rose Richards-Shrestha. Today, we’re diving into a topic that has been very real for me lately: when things don’t go as planned. Life has been exciting but bumpy, and I felt this was the perfect topic to explore.

“Expectations are resentments waiting to happen.” When we expect things to turn out a certain way, we set ourselves up for disappointment. As someone who practices meditation, I’ve learned that attachment to outcomes is a major source of suffering. Remember, there’s no such thing as being bad at meditation; it’s all about letting go of expectations and being compassionate with yourself.

Whether it’s expecting toddlers to follow a schedule (ha!), house projects to meet timelines, or specific expectations in relationships, unmet expectations can lead to feelings of grief, sadness, anger, and frustration. Clear communication and realistic expectations are key.

  1. Make Space for Your Feelings
It’s okay to feel upset. Process your emotions—cry, vent, exercise, whatever helps you move through them.

  2. Get Curious: Roadblock or Detour?
Ask yourself if this is a total roadblock or just a detour. Is the goal still feasible? Do you still want it despite the challenges? Sometimes, it’s a sign to move on. Talking to a friend or therapist can help.

  3. Trust the Process
Trust that you have the inner strength to navigate challenges. Just like plants pushing through concrete, we have an innate drive to keep going. Believe in your resilience.
