This week we are looking at a condition that is familiar yet still an unknown to most people unless they are personally affected by it. Sickle cell disease is invisible to the naked eye yet it has profound effect on people who have it.
Sickle cell disorder, also known as sickle cell disease, is a genetic condition that affects the red blood cells in the body. It is characterized by the presence of abnormal hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Carmen Contreias has been born with Sickle cell and over the years learned how to manage it successfully. Once she joined FB Sickle cell support groups, she realised that people keep looking to her for advice and so she dedicates some of her spare time to offer guidance to people with SC especially parents of children with SC as Carmen also has a daughter with SC. All this led to. Carmen joining a NHS working group that is focused on educating people on how to manage SC, especially in Africa, where the research and education has not yet caught up with UK and US.
