Description

Today, I will be explaining in 10 minutes or less the difference between intention and impact, and why understanding this is so important to inclusion.

Key takeaway number one: Intention is our own personal agenda, while impact is the receiver's experience. We often prioritise stating our intentions during conflicts or misunderstandings, but it's really the impact that truly matters.

Key takeaway number two: Impact is where harm is done. Unlike a broken bone from a physical impact, emotional and mental harm can be hard to measure, but it's real and valid. We must believe and listen to those who share their experiences of being impacted.

Key takeaway number three: Reflecting on our intentions and considering their impact is essential for personal growth. Instead of immediately defending ourselves with "that wasn't my intention," let's pause, listen, and learn from the potential harm we may have unintentionally caused.

Now, here's a thought-provoking question for you to reflect on as you listen to this episode: How might you approach conflicts or feedback differently if you prioritised impact over intent?

So you know the drill. Pop that kettle on or settle down in whichever way that works best for you, and let's get intentional on the Speaking of Inclusion podcast.
