Richard Bong Air Force Base, located in southeastern Wisconsin, was a Cold War-era military installation named after World War II flying ace Major Richard Ira Bong. Construction of the base began in the 1950s with the intention of it becoming a fighter-interceptor base to defend against potential Soviet bomber attacks. However, the base was decommissioned in 1959 before it was ever fully operational, making it one of the most expensive military construction projects to be abandoned before completion.
